Nature’s Finest : Soy Candles

Over the years, candle making has evolved and branched out to offer a large variety of candles. Lately a more natural method to make candles has become quite popular and that is soy candle making. Soy candles burn clean and create up to 95% less soot then more traditional candles. The wax is derived from the soybean plant and offers a great, natural alternative to petroleum based (paraffin) wax that has been much more common in the past for candle making. Soy candle wax also burns significantly cooler then traditional candles burn. This means that you get more value with soy candles, as they take longer to burn. The environment also benefits from soy candles, as they do not release any toxins into the air while they are burning.

The most common reason why people like to use candles is aromatherapy. The terminology for scented candles is “bella candle mia soy”. In the past, scented candles were much more commonly made with paraffin wax but in recent years we have seen a great increase in aromatherapy candles made with soy. Scented soy is much more readily available as it has become quite popular. Some of the more popular scents include: blackberry, vanilla, cinnamon, citrus blend, peach cobbler, gardenia, lemongrass and rose blossoms to name just a few. The scents available on today’s market are truly endless though and you are sure to find one that suits your needs.

While soy candles have seen a huge growth in popularity in recent years, the soy candle was actually invented in 1996 but a man named Michael Richards. Richards was seeking an alternative to paraffin but wanted to find something more economical then beeswax which can be quite costly. The Body Shop was the very first national chain to carry soy candles in their product line and since then the candles have really taken off. Now they can be found in many retailers all over the world. Soy candles are available through wholesale but there are many retailers that offer hand made soy candles as well.

Compared to normal paraffin candles, soy candles are a little bit more expensive to purchase. That being said, they also tend to be a better quality candle that lasts significantly longer then traditional candles. So in the long run, they work out to be about the same in cost.

To care for your soy candles keep the following tips in mind:

  • Keep your soy candles out of direct sunlight as it will cause discoloration (and possibly melting in a warm environment)
  • When you burn your candle for the first time, burn it long enough that the entire top of the candle liquefies. This will “train” the candle to burn correctly
  • Keep the wick trimmed to1/4 inch. The best way to do this is to let the candle cool after burning and then turn it upside down to trim. This prevents the black, burned parts of the wick that you have cut off from sticking to the top of the candle.
  • Most of all - enjoy!
